Online Competency Modelling

October 12th, 2001

Entegrys Incorporated is a Management Consulting firm based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, specializing in competency-based Human Resource management systems and software.

The Challenge

Armed with more than a decade of HR consulting experience, the content of a great 360° competency profiling tool and a prototype of their desired software application, Entegrys came to Metrex in search of a compelling way to disseminate these service offerings to their clients.

Time was of the essence - considerable interest had been generated for their Competency Profiling software, even in its early stages. But because the original application Entegrys envisioned was desktop software, many questions remained unanswered. How would data be retrieved and compiled to produce an integrated result? What about clients on the Macintosh platform? What about software pirating, reverse-engineering and upgrades?

The Solution

With the time pressure in mind, instead of building "from scratch", Metrex converted Entegrys’ Access-based prototype into a web-based application with MOMEX technology at its core. The simple strategy of putting the Entegrys Competency Profiling Suite online answered many questions. Centralization of the application ensured consistency of data, cross-platform compatibility and a significantly easier upgrade path than desktop software. The fact that web-based files are not accessible to users lays many security fears to rest.

With this web-based application, Entegrys also enjoys complete administrative control of the application at any time, day or night, from any location with Internet access and a web browser. "I used to believe having the software on disk was the only logical way to go," says Entegrys' President, Louise Ablack, “but the web application has proven to be infinitely more flexible. I can’t imagine going back to a desktop approach!”
